A novel use of colonoscopy forceps for biopsy of intervertebral disc

چکیده
BACKGROUND Core biopsy of vertebral bone is traditionally carried out in the prone position under radiological guidance using a trephine. If biopsy of the intervertebral disc is required, the same technique and instrumentation is used or fine-needle aspiration is performed. The biopsy obtained with the trephine relies on capillary action and the volume of sample tissue is often small. The sensitivity of this technique is poor, with rates ranging between 42% and 62%.1 With a larger sample of tissue, it is probable that the sensitivity of the technique may be improved. We propose a novel technique (using equipment already present in the operating theatre) that increases the volume of sample tissue obtained and could improve the likelihood of an organism being isolated.

Background & Aim: Low back pain is broadly documented as one of the most widespread pathologies in the advanced domain. Although the reasons of low back pain are uncountable, it has been meaningfully related to intervertebral disc degeneration. Present therapies for Intervertebral Disc (IVD) degeneration such as physical therapy and spinal fusion reduce symptoms' severity, but do not treat the ...
متن کاملComparison the Recurrence Rate of Intervertebral Disc Herniation in Two Surgical Methods of Hemi laminectomy and Partial Laminectomy
Background & Aims: Between 5% and 15% of patients with low back pain suffer from lumbar disc herniation, so intervertebral disc disease is one of the most common causes of low back pain. Surgical intervention for lumbar disc herniation is recommended in patients with severe symptoms and has hopeful results. Although surgery can reduce pain and improve physical function in the short term, its lo...

BACKGROUND A use of polypectomy techniques by endoscopist specialty (primary care, surgery, and gastroenterology) and experience (volume), and associations with serious gastrointestinal adverse events, were examined. METHODS A retrospective follow-up study with ambulatory surgery and hospital discharge datasets from Florida, 1999-2001, was used. Thirty-day hospitalizations due to colonic perf...
متن کاملMeasuring Dimensions of Lumbar Intervertebral Discs in Normal Subjects
Introduction: Disc degeneration is a natural aging process characterized by changes in appearance and chemical structure of the disc. This degeneration leads to back pain. In regard to the limitation of current therapeutical methods for patients with degenerated discs, arthroplasty has been suggested as an alternative method. To manufacture artificial discs for Iranians, determining normal lumb...
